Being a Vegetarian in Japan - Finding Veg Dishes
This is a continuation of an earlier article I wrote on vegetarianism (or lack of) here in Japan.
Here I want to try to show that even if you dont go to a vegetarian restaurant, there are dishes were you can be reasonably sure that it is veg.
Just one warning: This list may not be 100% foolproof. There may be some fish or ham or stock lurking around. The best bet is to ask like I showed in my previous article.
Japanese
Edamame 枝豆 boiled soybeans
Potato salad ポテトサラダ (May contain ham)
Kimchi キムチ
Tsukemono or Oshinko 漬物 or お新香 Pickles
Jyaga Bata じゃがバター Baked potato with butter
Okonomiyaki お好み焼き cabbage pancake (contains eggs)
Yasai kushi 野菜串 skewered BBQ vegetables
Salad サラダ (Be careful, ask about meat and ham)
Hiyayakko 冷奴 Cold tofu (ask for them to remove the bonito flakes katuobushi)
Onigiri おにぎり rice balls (But Ume plum only)
Kimi Chahan キムチチャーハン kimi fried rice
Cheezu Age チーズ揚げ Fried Cheese
Mozuku Su もずく酢 Green Mozuku in Vinegar
Gin nan 銀杏 GInko nuts
Corn Butter コーンバター
Yakisoba 焼きそば Ask them to remove the meat
Italian
Margherita マルゲリータ tomato pizza
Melanzane メランツァーネ eggplant and tomato pasta
Peperoncino ペペロンチーノ red pepper pasta
Porcini dake no Risotto ポルチーニ茸のリゾット Rissotto with porcini mushrooms
Arabiatta アラビアータ
Gnocchi ニョッキ
Korean
Bibinpa ビビンパ (ask for the kimchi one, but confirm that there is no meat)
